Meteora

Meteora is a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries built on natural sandstone pillars and peaks in Thessaly, Greece. The word "Meteora" means "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" and refers to the monasteries' unique location atop towering rocks. The monasteries were built between the 14th and 16th centuries, by monks seeking a secluded place for religious contemplation and study. Access to the monasteries was originally difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul goods and people up. Nowadays, the monasteries can be accessed by stairs and paths built into the rocks. There are currently six monasteries open to the public. The monasteries are considered to be one of the most important cultural and architectural sites in Greece and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Thermopylae, Statue of Leonidas (King of Sparta)

The statue of Leonidas at Thermopylae is a bronze statue in Greece that depicts the Spartan king Leonidas, who is best known for his role in the Battle of Thermopylae. The battle was fought in 480 BCE during the Persian Wars, in which a small force of Greeks, led by Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors, successfully held off a much larger Persian army for three days. The statue was erected in 1955, in the location where the battle took place. It is a representation of the Spartan king, standing tall, with a spear in one hand and a shield in the other, in the iconic pose of the warrior. The statue is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of Greek resistance and courage.
