Ancient Corinth

Ancient Corinth was a major city-state in ancient Greece, located on the isthmus of Corinth, the narrow strip of land that connects the Peloponnesian peninsula to the mainland of Greece. The city was a major center of trade and commerce, and it was known for its prosperity and wealth. Corinth had a strategic location, making it a center of communication between the Aegean and the Adriatic, allowing it to build a powerful navy and become a strong commercial power, as well as controlling the trade route which passed through the city. The city was also famous for its Temple of Apollo and its oracle, as well as being known as a place of worship to Aphrodite. The city was conquered and destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC but was rebuilt by Julius Caesar and became an important center of the Roman empire.

Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in Greece. The canal is approximately 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) long and its width varies between 21.3 meters (70 feet) at its base and 24.6 meters (81 feet) at water level. The idea of building a canal through the isthmus dates back to ancient times, but it was not until the 19th century that plans were drawn up to construct the canal. The construction of the canal began in 1881, but the project was plagued by financial and technical difficulties, and the canal was not completed until 1893. The canal offers huge benefits, as it eliminates the need for ships to sail around the Peloponnesian peninsula, saving a significant amount of time and money.

Vouliagmeni Lake is a unique geological formation located on the coast of Loutraki (16km northwest). It is a saltwater lake that is fed by underground thermal springs, which keep the water at a constant temperature of around 22-24 degrees Celsius (72-75 degrees Fahrenheit) all year round. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and has a small sandy beach on one side, making it a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. Visitors can also take advantage of the nearby spa facilities, which offer a variety of treatments, including mud baths and massages. The lake is also a popular spot for snorkeling and diving, as the warm, crystal-clear water is home to a variety of fish and other marine life. Overall, it is considered a unique and special place that worth visiting.

It is dedicated to the goddess Hera, who was the wife of Zeus and the queen of the gods in Greek mythology. The temple was built in the Archaic period, around the 7th century BCE, and it is one of the oldest examples of the Doric order of Greek architecture. Today, the temple is considered as an important archaeological site, and it is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts.
